Let Us Make Man in Our Own Image, in the Likeness of Ourselves (Gen 1:26) in the Interpretation of Basil the Great and Ambrose of Milan

The article analyses the commentary of St. Ambrose of Milan and St. Basil the Great on Gen 1:26 in their homilies on the Hexaemeron. The author presents how the two Church Fathers read the words of Gen 1:26: “Let us make man (point 1) in our own image (point 2), in the likeness of ourselves (point 3), with special emphasis on the meaning of the terms “image” and “likeness”. Commenting this verse both authors underscore the trinitarian theme and elaborate on three relevant theological truths: the presence of the Son of God in the work of the creation of man, the consubstantiality of the Father and the Son, their unity of action and distinction of persons. They also stress that Christ is the image of God and possesses the same divinity as the Father. In St. Basil writings, the “image” implies human nature in the sense that it possesses reason and free will, while the “likeness” is man’s striving for perfection. St. Ambrose accentuates the truth that it is not the body but the soul that is the image of God, being even a God-painted copy of the image.
